Surrounded by legends and history, the innovative series of three wines of Georgiadis Canteen, succeeds in adding glamour while addressing not only those with restless palates, but also all those who want to discover the meaning of quality.
The series of “Marmaromenos Vasilias”, the “Marbled King”, is inspired by a fascinating Byzantine legend that has managed to keep us spellbound for almost 6 centuries. We, at Georgiadis Canteen have created an equally delightful wine which we chose to name after that legend. The story has it that when the City of Cities “Constantinople” was occupied by the Ottomans in 1453, the last Byzantine Emperor, Constantinos Palaiologos, went missing under mysterious circumstances. It is said that the moment he was surrounded by the Turks during battle, an angel of the Lord grabbed him, turned him into marble and hid him in a cave. He has been waiting there for centuries for the time to come until the angel gives him back his life and his sword so as to reclaim the Empire from its conquerors.
Our wine’s label depicts the inscription found in the so-called tomb of the “Marbled King” in the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople, whose text remained a great mystery for over 1000 years. The one who managed to decipher it was Gennadios Scholarios, the first Patriarch of the Orthodox Church after the fall of “Constantinople” to the Ottomans.
